Rolling Stone Web Chat Transcript
This chat took place on the 23rd of January, 2001 at 7pm.
I am drusilla, just in case you wanted to know...

Caveman: Killing Heidi just released Mascara as a single in the USA, when do you think you will tour there, and what are your expectations of success?
Jesse Hooper: Hopefully we will be going back just after March. Airplay is starting!!! So expectations are good.
**JoDes**: Hey guys, will you be releasing any of your material on vinyl in the future?
Jesse Hooper: I would like to do a limited run of vinyl.
Vnssman: When do you think Killing Heidi will be doing a new album?
Jesse Hooper: We will be recording early to mid year.
reflecting_heidi: Will there be a behind the scenes video of Killing Heidi coming out soon!? Pleasssee!
Jesse Hooper: Yes, we are starting to get the footage together for it now.
*soupgirl*: I saw your official site is under construction, is there any chance for drum tabs to be in there?
Jesse Hooper: The site should be up soon, tabs seems like a good idea. Maybe we will get people to submit tabs.
Jewel: Sex, drugs, rock ‘n’ roll or chocolate... take your pick!
Jesse Hooper: Everything in moderation!
*soupgirl*: I heard a rumour that you guys were doing a gig on the 9th of March, but I can’t find any info on it, so is it true or just a rumour?
Jesse Hooper: Good question! I´ll find out…
KillingHeidiChick: Do you prefer playing at festivals or doing your own concerts?
Jesse Hooper: Hey El.
Ella: Hi all.
Jesse Hooper: I like both for different reasons, festivals for sick atmospheres and our own shows for a more intimate vibe.
drusilla: Do you often visit Killing Heidi fan sites?
Ella: Yes I definitely do! Though I don´t often post messages...
**JoDes**: What is the next single release going to be, and will it feature new tracks? (Happy birthday to Ella for next week).
Ella: Not until the next album probably, thanks for the birthday message, I can´t wait to be legal!
Jesse Hooper: Ha.
mauler: Will you be releasing a Reflector song/sheet music book?
Jesse Hooper: Hope so!
Ella: Ah that´s a good idea, but I´m not sure.
SuPeRgIrL: Ella, you are my idol, any advice you can give me on starting at a new school?
Ella: Thanks for the compliment and I think be yourself is the key, if they like it good, if they don´t who cares.
KillingHeidiChick: What is your favourite song off the album?
Jesse Hooper: ”A Jar Labelled Small”.
Ella: It changes between "Real People" and probably "A Jar Labelled Small".
Jesse Hooper: Or “Astral”.
Caveman: You guys added the Smashing Pumpkins “1979” at your recent concerts - will you be adding any other covers in the future?
Jesse Hooper: Who knows, we like to mix it up a bit.
Ella: Um, we really enjoy doing covers that reflect our influences, so probably yes.
mauler: Is the next album going to be more acoustic or rock?
Jesse Hooper: Both, more of each extreme.
Ella: Hmm, top secret... but all I can say is that it will be bigger, better, fatter.
Jesse Hooper: Sorry El…
SuPeRgIrL: How do you get inspired for such meaningful songs?
Ella: It´s all around you, I get inspired by everyday things.
Jesse Hooper: Life experiences.
*SuperStar*: Is Ella looking forward to seeing Bob Dylan?
Jesse Hooper: Where?
Ella: Yeah, when am I going to see him? I have to see him it´s my aim in life.
^TigeR^: Your American film clip for “Weir” is awesome! Was it fun making?
Ella: Yes it was totally, totally excellent and very funny.
Jesse Hooper: Fuck yeah, sun and fun.
bitx: Ella we know you have a boyfriend. Can you tell us about him?
Jesse Hooper: He he he, he´s in the “Live Without It” video.
Ella: Um he is 5ft10, sandy blond hair, blue eyes and a great sense of humour and a good appetite and scruffy looking. In fact if you saw him you would probably think he was a homeless person!
Jesse Hooper: Yeah, he is a bum.
KillingHeidiChick: Do you prefer the Australian or American “Weir” clip?
Ella: Definitely the Australian one is closest to my heart.
Jesse Hooper: I agree.
Ella: But the American one is a kind of indicator of where Killing Heidi could go in the future.
Jesse Hooper: True, but we can take it any direction we want, which changes.
drusilla: What is the most embarassing thing that has ever happened to you during a performance?
Ella: Probably when my pants were almost pulled down by my in-ear monitor pack and I almost flashed the crowd.
Jesse Hooper: Fucking up simple guitar chords is humiliating.
killingdaisies: Ella, have you met/seen P.J. Harvey yet? If so what was she like?
Jesse Hooper: Seen her round, cute too!
Ella: Yes I have seen her many times but haven´t been brave enough to introduce myself. I even sit behind her in line to get food and we watched Coldplay together, but still didn´t talk.
mauler: What is the song "Katrina" about?
Jesse Hooper: ?
Ella: Not really sure, it was one of those songs that half come to me in a dream, but I think it’s just a story of a girl, a strange story.
mercury_satin: I read in an interview that you use to listen to a lot of Tool. What other influences do you both have?
Ella: For me, I like old folk music and I like early Hole, Veruca Salt and alternative country music as well.
Jesse Hooper: Kyuss, Hendrix, Pumpkins, guitary stuff.
XXX: What do you think of Limp Bizkit? Do you think they are sexist like Placebo and PJ Harvey do?
Jesse Hooper: Explain?
Ella: I wasn´t aware that was how the others felt about them, but I do have a problem with some of their theories i.e. everything is fucked - because I don´t think so.
Jesse Hooper: Placebo are really cool to hang with but I haven´t met Dursty yet, seen him round heaps.
SuPeRgIrL: What are your ambitions in life?
Jesse Hooper: Rock out.
Ella: Ha ha, to be happy and to learn how to ride my motorbike and make a kickass second album.
supergirl_2001: You guys are so like a huge inspiration... was it hard to get where you are?
Ella: Ah, well we´ve been really, really lucky, so it hasn´t been a hard slog, but that´s rare.
Jesse Hooper: Persistence, work and luck.
mercury_satin: Have you yet met Placebo, if so, what is Brian like?
Ella: I have met them, and they´re really nice, Brian has his nails painted for him before he goes on stage.
Jesse Hooper: He is really cool! Not the ego many expect.
Drac: What did you get for Christmas?
Jesse Hooper: Chilled with family.
Ella: KE100 ‘94 model, I know I am a very lucky girl - it´s a dirt bike. And I am very grateful.
SuPeRgIrL: Ella, what do you want for your birthday?
Ella: Um, I haven´t really thought about it. A 2001 that was as good as 2000.
reflecting_heidi: Jesse - did you like your b’day cake at the Gaslight Instore?
Ella: That was so beautiful! I was jealous.
Jesse Hooper: Yes, endless thanks for the team who made it happen.
supergirl_2001: What was it like doing a show with Sunk Loto... at the Arena in Brissie?
Ella: Really cool, and I met them again the day before yesterday at the Big Day Out and they were lovely.
Jesse Hooper: They rock, its good to see the young blood moving up in the industry.
Beck: I just wanted to know what Killing Heidi think about Napster?
Ella: Um, I think it´s kind of dodgy but I do use it. So I am in two minds about it.
Jesse Hooper: I think it was bound to happen sooner or later.
Lix: Do you think Vanessa Amorosi sucks for complaining about not winning an ARIA?
Ella: Um, I think it is crazy that she didn´t get an ARIA but I probably wouldn´t have reacted so strongly, and I think that was her management anyway not her.
Jesse Hooper: We had so much fun being there the year before that I don´t think we would have thrown a tantrum this year if we didn’t win anything.
killingdaisies: Jesse, what do you think about playing at your second B.D.O. ?
Jesse Hooper: BDO rocks hard, very hard!
reflecting_heidi: Since you couldn´t perform at Homebake (damn) are you gonna make the Sydney BDO rock even more?
Ella: Absolutely! It´s fuel for the fire - we didn´t get Homebake or Livid so we´ll be giving BDO our all.
Jesse Hooper: Of course, it just makes this show even bigger.
mauler: I heard that the “Weir” is now unsafe to swim in, is that true?
Ella: Nah, I guess it was always unsafe but we swam in it! Yes it is extremely unsafe in fact.
Jesse Hooper: Great...
supergirl_2001: If you guys are down... what do you do to cheer yourself up?
Jesse Hooper: Sing the Incredible Hulk theme.
Ella: Phone a friend and catch up on goss.
SuPeRgIrL: What exactly is “Live Without” about?
Jesse Hooper: ?
Ella: Um that´s another one I can´t answer because sometimes I write and only months and months later I will have an idea as to what it was about.
SpaceMonkey16: Have you guys ever tried drugs?
Jesse Hooper: Never, just say no.
Ella: I have just popped 2 cold and flu tablets...
KillingHeidiChick: What is the worst thing about touring?
Jesse Hooper: Missing home.
Ella: Everything except actually playing the show. I love connecting with the audience but being away from home really sucks.
Caveman: Asked on behalf of Carlie: Do you guys like cheese, and what kind do you like best?
Jesse Hooper: Cheese? It stinks like cheese and I hate it.
Ella: My favourite is the Old Bitey - the mature tasty, but I hate the plastic wrapped cheese.
drums4eva: Do you miss your friends at Violet Town Ella?
Ella: Yes I love them dearly, but they´re coming to Melbourne! So soon I won´t be such a loner.
Beddy: What do you think of Fred Durst? Have you guys met him?
Ella: No, I haven´t met him but he does seem to have very itchy balls - I don´t think I have seen him not hanging onto them.
Jesse Hooper: Not yet but hopefully before the end of the BDO tour.
mauler: What is the last line after "she said she wanted to be left alone.." in “Leave Me Alone”?
Ella: I think it is a combination of "She said she wanted to be left alone" and also "She says you will leave me alone" and then "She broke down screams leave me"
drums4eva: Which do you prefer Coke or Fanta?
Jesse Hooper: Pepsi.
Ella: I alternate, I like Coke but I also like Fanta when it´s really hot. Bomba is actually my favourite.
killingdaisies: Jesse, my boyfriend really needs a makeover, where do you shop?
Jesse Hooper: Everywhere… Mone11, Pervert, Rogues.
Drac: What will you get your boyfriend for his birthday?
Ella: Nothing unless he behaves but most likely a crappy free t-shirt I got from a radio station.
Drac: Maybe he wants a 4 burner BBQ…
Ella: Drac... do I perhaps know you?
Beck: What is your favourite song at the moment?
Ella: Probably "Shiver" by Coldplay or a song by the Resin Dogs. I think it´s "Daily Trouble".
Drac: Jesse has your hair always been red?
Jesse Hooper: Orange then red.
SuPeRgIrL: Do you guys believe in God?
Ella: Ah not the god that most people do, not the conventional god, but definitely something. I´m not into religion but I´m into faith.
Jesse Hooper: Sometimes.
drums4eva: What radio station do you like best? Triple J or Triple M?
Ella: Ooh, I listen to many stations but mostly I just listen to CDs.
Jesse Hooper: JJJ.
supergirl_2001: Have you ever met silverchair... they seem like really interesting guys?
Ella: I´ve met Ben and Chris and Ben is really cool but I haven´t met Daniel.
^TigeR^: Ella, what colour is your hair naturally?
Ella: It is sandy brown but it goes kinda blondish in summer to my horror.
KillingHeidiChick: What is your favourite CD at the moment?
Ella: At the moment, um probably a toss up between the Resin Dogs, Boss Hog or the Blues Brothers 2000.
Jesse Hooper: Queens of the Stone Age Rated R. ava: You guys put on a truly amazing show at the Auckland BDO and you said you´d be back very soon, will you be at the Summer Jam festival in March?
Ella: I don´t know what festival it is, it´s for a radio station and it is with Stellar and Zed and I am also going to squeeze in a holiday in NZ.
SpaceMonkey16: How old were you guys when your parents split up?
Jesse Hooper: ??? High School.
Ella: I think I was 10 or 11, I was in Grade 6 but it is cool because I think it was definitely a good idea and they still get along really well.
SuPeRgIrL: I can help you meet Daniel if you want me to Ella, is it true that you have a secret crush on him?
Jesse Hooper: Ha ha maybe he on her.
Ella: No I definitely don´t have a crush on Daniel, I like some love handles to hold on to.
mauler: Where are Wazza and Adam?
Jesse Hooper: Sleeping.
Ella: Um, Adam is at home with his girlfriend and his cat, probably firing up the bbq.
Jesse Hooper: Fingerbang!
Ella: Wazza is slaving away on the new Killing Heidi site.
melzook: Where on the globe are you guys chatting from?
Jesse Hooper: Ella´s house.
Ella: Ah, I´m in Mt Martha outside of Melbourne at a friends holiday place.
SpaceMonkey16: Are you guys friends with any fans?
Jesse Hooper: Yes, heaps.
Ella: Ah hopefully all my friends are fans, but yeah I have met lots of really cool people that I´m sure I would be friends with given the opportunity.
SpaceMonkey16: Was your school a shit hole or was it cool?
Jesse Hooper: Totally shit! Hi Benalla.
Ella: Sometimes it was like a shit hole but I do appreciate the outlook it gave me and I did have some great teachers.
Drac: Jesse - can you turn off my printer when you have finished in my office!
Jesse Hooper: No worries.
jojo_69: How do you think of such good songs?
Ella: That´s nice, thank you. I don´t know, I think you just have to love music and for me, I want to write a song that will live forever.
Jesse Hooper: Try something cool, then try to make it 100 times even cooler.
KillingHeidiChick: What is your favourite ice cream flavour?
Jesse Hooper: Tang flavoured!
Ella: For me, vanilla with biscuits - cookies and cream.
killingdaisies: Ella and Jesse – what would be your most embarrassing moment in public?
Ella: Don´t know.... probably when I fell on my arse in Ackland St in St Kilda, and everyone saw and I was carrying food at the time which ended up all over me!
Jesse Hooper: Getting caught with Bobina the tranny, midget hooker in my limmo, or was that a dream?
Ella: That definitely wasn´t a dream - I remember seeing that midget.
SuPeRgIrL: Do you write emails to fans?
Ella: Not often but now and again, it is pretty intense because they can ask a lot of you.
Jesse Hooper: Yes.
Philly: If you weren´t in a band what do you think you would be doing job wise?
Ella: Ah I want to try everything from waitressing to tight rope walking.
Jesse Hooper: Checkout chick in a supermarket.
drusilla: Do you often get asked the same questions over and over, like the "what does Killing Heidi mean" question? (Don´t worry, I am not asking that one. It’s just an example.)
Jesse Hooper: It happens all the time.
Ella: Yes always, and it can become very boring and I am really impressed no-one has asked that question in this chat.
jojo_69: What do you do in your spare time?
Ella: Learning how to ride a motorbike, seeing my friends, and worm my rabbit.
Jesse Hooper: Playstation.
mauler: Have you noticed any jealousy from any other bands?
Jesse Hooper: A little bit.
Ella: I think there was a time when some other bands were grumpy because of how easy our success came compared to theirs but I haven´t felt any of their negative vibes for ages.
mercury_satin: I know you both like Tool, but I would like to know, what are your opinions towards A Perfect Circle?
Ella: I haven´t heard the album, but I like "Judith". Maynard has a wonderful voice.
Jesse Hooper: Cool.
*soupgirl*: Ella, what’s your rabbits name?
Ella: There are two, the big fat one is "Turbo" and the little black one is "Dirk Diggler".
*soupgirl*: Gotta say they are cute names.
Philly: Ella, what’s your favourite item of clothing?
Ella: I just got a really cool new jacket in L.A and anything by Mone 11.
drusilla: Jesse, do you have any pets or stuffed animals?
Ella: He is a stuffed animal.
Jesse Hooper: Stuffed Gerbils.
supergirl_2001: Any of you guys vegans/vegies?
Ella: No but I was when I was younger. And the guy from Frenzal has inspired me to maybe be a vegan... but I think I like meat too much.
Jesse Hooper: I eat meat.
Rolling Stone Web: Alright everybody we better let Ella and Jesse enjoy their days off. Thanks guys for coming to the chat.
Ella: Thanks so much to listening to my blather tonight and see you at a gig soon... see you at the Big Day Out.
Jesse Hooper: Bye.
